Fall is one of the most magical times of year to capture your newborn’s first photos. The cozy vibes, beautiful colors, and festive touches make it the perfect backdrop for capturing those first precious moments. Whether you’re planning an indoor shoot or heading outside to take advantage of the autumn scenery, preparing your newborn (and yourself!) for a fall-themed photoshoot is key to a successful session.
As a mom who understands the whirlwind of caring for a newborn, I know that prepping for a photoshoot can feel like just one more thing on your to-do list. But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! Here are my top tips and tricks for ensuring your little one is comfortable, cozy, and ready to shine in their first fall-themed photoshoot.
1. Dress for the Season—But Keep It Simple
It’s tempting to dress your newborn in the cutest fall outfit you can find, but comfort is key! Newborns have sensitive skin and can be easily overwhelmed, so keep their clothing simple and soft. Think cozy knitted onesies or swaddle blankets in warm autumn colors like burnt orange, deep reds, or soft browns.
Since fall weather can be unpredictable, layering is essential. If you’re planning an outdoor shoot, bring a couple of extra blankets to wrap your baby in between shots to keep them warm. If you’re going the indoor route, the studio or your home will likely be warm enough, but those layers will still help keep your baby snug.
2. Timing is Everything
When it comes to newborn photoshoots, timing plays a huge role in how smoothly everything goes. Newborns tend to be sleepiest and most content in the mornings, so scheduling your session earlier in the day is often a good idea. A well-rested baby makes for a much more relaxed session and those sweet, sleepy photos we all love.
Also, make sure your baby has had a good feeding right before the session. A full belly equals a happy baby, and a happy baby equals adorable photos!
3. Make the Setting Cozy
Fall-themed shoots are all about those warm, cozy vibes. Whether you're shooting indoors or outside, make sure your baby feels comfortable and secure. For an indoor shoot, set up soft blankets in rich fall colors or rustic textures like wool or fleece. Incorporating soft props, like knitted pumpkins or rustic wooden baskets, can add to the autumn atmosphere while keeping your newborn cozy.
For an outdoor shoot, the weather can be tricky. Even in fall, mornings can be chilly, and afternoons might warm up quickly. Make sure you have enough layers and extra blankets to wrap your baby up during transitions or in between shots.
4. Bring Along the Essentials
While fall photoshoots are about capturing the magic of the season, it’s important to focus on what will keep your baby comfortable and happy. Make sure to pack extra diapers, a change of clothes, and your baby’s favorite swaddle or blanket. A pacifier or small soothing toy can also come in handy during those fussy moments.
If you're heading outdoors, consider packing a portable heater or heating pads to keep your baby warm during the shoot. Outdoor fall weather can be unpredictable, and it’s always better to be prepared so that your baby stays snug and cozy.
5. Go with the Flow
Finally, my biggest tip: go with the flow. Newborns have their own rhythms, and it’s important to be flexible. Sometimes the weather might not cooperate, or your baby might not be in the mood for pictures. And that’s okay! The beauty of newborn photography is in capturing the real, authentic moments.
Some of the best photos come from those unplanned moments—whether it’s a little stretch, a yawn, or even a fussy face. Don’t stress if things don’t go perfectly. Trust me, as a mom and a photographer, I know that the best memories often come from the unscripted moments.
